The location of Black Belt 'Eddie'; whom is affected by the spacing syntax
glitch.
The spacing syntax glitch is an error relating to how all of the current Generation IV Pokémon games read a string of dialogue consisting of multiple spaces. When a string of dialogue includes more than two spaces immediately following the last character the game will often cut letters off the screen, or sometimes display some form of glitch dialog.
Black Belt Eddie
In Pokémon Platinum one Black Belt named Eddie in the post-league section of Victory Road will cause the spacing syntax glitch. When the player defeats this Black Belt he will give the words "Done in." however, there are multiple spaces between the words 'done' and 'in'. Therefore, the game will display unreadable text instead.
Generation IV Placeholder glitches
The placeholders for 'no Pokémon' with an identifier of 0 (00 in hexadecimal) have names which are undefined. The game will take these as undefined characters with a length of 0, which the game will take as 256 spaces. As a result, the spacing syntax glitch affects these glitch Pokémon and often when directly encountered with a game-altering device the game will display 'A w ld appeared'.
The placeholder glitch with an identifier of 0 can, however be seen in the player's party without the use of a game-altering device through a variation of the Pomeg Berry Glitch and can also be seen when the player enters a Double Battle with only an egg and one Pokémon in early builds of the Japanese versions of Pokémon Diamond and Pearl.
